Becoming a foster family in Malaysia means providing family-based care to a child in need under the Children Act 2001. Applicants are assessed by the Department of Social Welfare, and being able to respond to everyday emergencies — including basic first aid — is part of providing safe care.

Foster care in Malaysia is governed by the Children Act 2001 and overseen by the Department of Social Welfare (Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat, JKM). Foster parents are offered a foster child by the Director General of Social Welfare or the Children's Court and must pass an assessment of health, family stability and home safety. Training programmes prepare carers, and holding a current first-aid and CPR certificate is strongly encouraged to handle choking, injuries and cardiac emergencies.

JKM monitors the placement throughout the fostering period, and carers must report any injury within 24 hours. A first-aid certificate is an additional preparation step alongside the suitability assessment and home visit, not a stand-alone qualification to foster.
