First Aid & CPR Malaysia

In health care, maintaining high standards of care is essential to protect the public. In Malaysia, keeping clinical skills current is a condition of a nurse's practising certificate, while for care roles such as elderly-care worker a valid first-aid and CPR certificate is the credential employers expect. Here is what the rules expect for your role — and how recognized, up-to-date, documented training meets it.

Health professionals: continuing education and up-to-date skills

Nurses in Malaysia are accountable to the Nursing Board Malaysia (Lembaga Jururawat Malaysia), under the Ministry of Health, for keeping their knowledge and skills current. Under the Nurses Act 1985, continuing professional development (CPD) points are required to renew the Annual Practising Certificate (APC), with the aim of maintaining clinical competence, including the ability to respond in an emergency.

CPD points are recorded on a supervisor-verified CPD-LB form, and clinical courses count toward the point total. The Board expects nurses to maintain competence and to be ready to provide emergency assistance, which recertifying in resuscitation supports.

CPD points are required to renew the APC under the Nurses Act 1985; recommended annual minimums are 25 to 30 points for staff nurses and 35 to 40 for tutors, matrons and sisters. A basic life support or CPR course can count toward this total where it is delivered by a recognised provider and meets the Board's criteria.

The requirement is met by any recognized continuing-education activity on an eligible topic. CPR/AED, ACLS (advanced cardiovascular life support) and PALS are among the eligible activities; other topics also qualify (for example safe prescribing, suicide prevention or violence prevention). A single course therefore both meets the obligation and counts toward your hours — provided you keep the proof.

How training becomes recognized

Not all activities are equal. For continuing education to be recognized by a professional order, it must meet specific criteria:

  • the instructor’s competence;
  • the relevance and quality of the content;
  • the training framework;
  • the quality of the material provided;
  • mechanisms to monitor and assess participation.

In Malaysia, the Nursing Board Malaysia sets the criteria a learning activity must meet to count as CPD, verified by a supervisor on the CPD-LB form. Our training is designed to meet these criteria.

Support and care staff: a certificate required to work

A CPR and first-aid course does not replace occupational training — it is added to it. To work with vulnerable people, a valid first-aid certificate is often required in addition to your professional training.

For care staff, the pathway depends on the workplace. In care centres under the Care Centre Act 1993, SKM-3 (Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia Level 3) in elderly care is mandatory; for in-home care, where SKM-3 is not legally required, standalone CPR and first-aid certificates are the accepted credentials. In that home-care segment the role requires a valid first-aid and CPR certificate in addition to care training, and a recognized certificate meets that requirement — kept current and renewed every two years.
